Uvaldo Gonzalez, 42, has been charged with first-degree armed robbery, first-degree carjacking, third-degree receiving a stolen motor vehicle, third-degree theft of a motor vehicle, and third-degree possession of a weapon for an unlawful purpose on Friday, Oct. 18, Bergen County Prosecutor Mark Musella said.
Those charges were filed in connection with the incidents that unfolded on Route 46 in South Hackensack, before his arrest at the GWB, the prosecutor said.
Gonzalez remains in custody at the Bergen County Jail pending additional court appearances in Bergen County Superior Court for the various charges filed in this case.
A criminal complaint obtained by Daily Voice says Gonzalez stabbed one Port Authority Police officer six to seven times in the torso and twice in the head while trying to steal a police vehicle on the bridge sometime between 2:35 a.m. and 3 a.m. Sunday, Oct. 13.
The complaint also says Gonzalez opened the passenger side door of the car, got in, locked the car, and then tried to put the vehicle in gear, hitting the gas. He kicked and punched two different officers who were placing him in handcuffs, police paperwork says.
That all happened after Gonzalez crashed a stolen vehicle into a business on Route 46 in South Hackensack and then carjacked another vehicle, according to Musella.
A short time later, the vehicle carjacked from the business in South Hackensack was found disabled on the George Washington Bridge. That's when PAPD responded and found Gonzalez, who attacked them.
Gonzalez "appeared to be under the influence of drugs or alcohol at the time of the offense" and had a crack pipe on him, police paperwork says.
Once Gonzalez was in handcuffs, he was taken to a local area hospital and later released and jailed.
Gonzalez has also been charged with careless driving, reckless driving, driving after license/registration was suspended/revoked, traffic on marked lanes, DUI, and three different counts of criminal attempt.
